Computer Systems Of Both Obama and McCain Campaigns Victims of Foreign Entity Cyberattack

Do you know where one of the “front lines” is in international war / finance / fraud? Computers. At least President Elect Obama now knows this first hand.

1)The computer systems of both the Obama and McCain campaigns were victims of a sophisticated cyberattack by an unknown “foreign entity,” prompting a federal investigation, NEWSWEEK reports today.

At the Obama headquarters in midsummer, technology experts detected what they initially thought was a computer virus—a case of “phishing,” a form of hacking often employed to steal passwords or credit-card numbers. But by the next day, both the FBI and the Secret Service came to the campaign with an ominous warning: “You have a problem way bigger than what you understand,” an agent told Obama’s team. “You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded off your system.” The following day, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe heard from White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, to the same effect: “You have a real problem … and you have to deal with it.”
—————
Officials at the FBI and the White House told the Obama campaign that they believed a foreign entity or organization sought to gather information on the evolution of both camps’ policy positions—information that might be useful in negotiations with a future administration. The Feds assured the Obama team that it had not been hacked by its political opponents. (Obama technical experts later speculated that the hackers were Russian or Chinese.) A security firm retained by the Obama campaign took steps to secure its computer system and end the intrusion. White House and FBI officials had no comment earlier this week.

Nothing like being a victim to alert a person to the danger. I wonder if any technology-related policies will benefit from Obama’s victimization.

2)Meanwhile, in Russia, things are heating up. Foxnews has a piece about Russian President Medvedev “sending a signal” to the US.

Russia will deploy missiles near NATO member Poland in response to U.S. missile defense plans, President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday in his first state of the nation speech.

Medvedev also singled out the United States for criticism, casting Russia’s war with Georgia in August and the global financial turmoil as consequences of aggressive, selfish U.S. policies.

Speaking just hours after Obama was declared the victor in the U.S. presidential election, Medvedev said he hoped the incoming administration will take steps to improve badly damaged U.S. ties with Russia. He suggested it is up to the U.S. — not the Kremlin — to seek to improve relations.

“I stress that we have no problem with the American people, no inborn anti-Americanism. And we hope that our partners, the U.S. administration, will make a choice in favor of full-fledged relations with Russia,” Medvedev said.

Well, here we go. A Russian demand for a new American President to kiss some butt. Hmmmmm.

Drilling For Oil? Whoopee!

You all know I be liking Glenn Beck…..he had an interesting program on tonight..You just won’t believe it! Say it ain’t so…Not!

You are not going to believe this; There is drilling for oil finally going on. Guess what? It is  China and India doing the drilling 50 miles from Key West! That’s what I said..Bunny Bread! You read it correctly. Yep, right off our Florida Coast..Whoo Hoo! They call it slant drilling…which means not only could they tap into the natural gas and oil into the Cuban outer Continental Shelf, but it would also allow them arguably to drill into our natural gas.  They can take the oil from underneath us and, yet, we’re not doing a dadgum thing about it.  This is — making me crazy! If you see a woman running up and down the street slightly disheveled and screaming bloody murder..well, you got the right one baby!

What’s amazing about this, too,  is this is the same sort of technology they want to use in an war so they don’t stop.  So, you obviously know they’re going to be disturbing the environment.  In Anwar they can drill hole and drill all under the bottom there. Did you read that right? They will most likely disturb the environment..Yes, they are not concerned with their own nations environment when it comes to the economy and for sure their energy. Do you really think America that they are going to be concerned with ours?

Havana, Cuba) Cuba has 59 blocks of deep Gulf of Mexico waters claimed in an economic exclusion zone fronting the United States. Of the 59, 28 have been reserved for exploration by seven foreign companies.

The latest to join is the Brazilian state oil company Petrobras which signed the agreement with the Cuban state oil company CUPET on Friday.

The US Geological Survey estimated the North Cuba basin could contain 4.6 billion barrels of oil, with a high-end potential of 9.3 billion barrels, and close to 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

PDVSA of Venezuela is already a major partner of Cuba in oil, taking out blocks in the gulf and building and modernizing refineries. Others signing agreements include Spain’s Repsol-YPF, India’s ONGC and Nordsk Hydro, Vietnam state oil and gas group Petrovietnam, Malaysia’s state-run Petronas and Canada’s Sherritt International.

So, along with Venezuela, Spain, India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Canada, now Brazil will be drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Isn’t it odd that the only country that can’t drill in the Gulf of Mexico is the one which borders it on three sides?

This is absolutely incredible to me.  Everyone I talked to this weekend, everyone I talked to said, I can’t do it anymore.  I don’t know what — I mean, I don’t even know what to do.  May I ask you a question, America?  How are you doing it?  How are you taking your kids to ballet, to karate, to, you know, Little League, to soccer?  How are you running them to Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, to the church on Sunday, to school, back and forth?  Most stay at home moms are not at home.  They’re usually in the car shlepping the kids.  How are you affording it anymore?  Gas is going to be the top line expense with everyone.

I mean, food is not magically going up because of, you know, oh, gee, it’s hard to, you know, make a bagel now.  Food is going up because of fuel.  Fertilizer, fuel, delivery, ethanol, all of the things that Congress has done and do you know what I’ve been saying for awhile?  this country is disenfranchised.   The people in Congress are not listening to us. 13 percent approval rating of Congress. They’re not listening.

Are you with me yet that if we continue down this path, if we continue down this path of — they’re debating cap and trade.  It’s going to cost $1.50 more per gallon.  This is what they’re working on, cap and trade.

Now, it’s not going to pass this time around, but you watch because all three, all three presidential candidates are for cap and trade, which will add $1.50 per gallon for your gasoline.  The EPA estimates it will take 1.1 to $2.8 trillion out of our GDP.  70 percent of our GDP is consumer spending.  That means to take $2.8 trillion out of the GDP it means that you have $2.8 trillion or about, what, 70 percent of that, 1.5, $1.8 trillion less to spend.  It means it stops you from spending because you don’t have any money left and this is what they’re doing.  I’m telling you.  Pitch forks are coming.  The media doesn’t discuss the costs of these things.  So, people ya need to let your reps know what you know and want or don’t want..a need to tell your neigbors, your family, your friends, if you want TRUE CHANGE..not the fancy rhetoric talk of politicians.

Do you know what?  Before September 11th, when we were all fat and lazy and everybody was talking about technology and Glenn Beck said, I warn you, I warn you, what were the elements that I said?  Do you recall at all?  He told us all you have to do is create fear and hunger. Fear and hunger.  We’ve got fear.  The war is going.  You’ve got fear.  You’re creating hunger now.  When you put hunger into this, because people are not afraid of what they cannot feel or see. Issues are important to us…just saying…I am thinking those two issues at top are going to take over…

But wait a minute.  See, that doesn’t matter.  It doesn’t matter.  People aren’t seeking out that information.  They’re going to seek out the information about gas because it affects them.  Food prices, it affects them.  The media can say whatever you want, but when I say to you China is 50 miles off the coast of Florida building a platform right now along with India, building a platform that includes slant drilling, so it’s 50 miles off our shores, they’re taking the oil from Cuba’s property and they’re also slant drilling into our property or they have the capability of doing that and we are not drilling on our own property, people will say enough of it. OR they should say ENOUGH ALREADY! Everybody can drill offshore except the US..and they are coming here. Our country is rich in resources…we are tied up..we are not PC. We are spoilers. We have no sense to use our own resources and be energy independent and do it with style with the environment intact.. I don’t believe that..I think American ingenuity and innovation is there…it just has to be unleashed.

While  Cap and trade is difficult to understand.  Drilling for your own resources is not.  The shale in Colorado is not.  I mean, they are going up for the oil sands up in Canada.  They’re doing it with the oil sands.  They won’t let us take shale.  Here’s what you need to know.  In 2007 congressional democrats led an effort which became law to prevent the department of interior from enacting new rules for commercial oil shale leases until at least October 2008.  The republicans in May this year tried to get around it saying, okay.  Can we stop this?  Let’s go after the shale.  Well, they didn’t do it.  They didn’t go after the shale.  The democrats are still saying, no, no, no.  The mountains are too important.  Put the mountain back.  Coast off of Florida and California, President Clinton, no, no, no.  Cannot drill anything off our shores until 2012.  Here is what’s at stake:  The outer continental shelf moratorium, the at LAN tack ocean, the outer continental shelf moratorium, Pacific Ocean, outer continental shelf moratorium, Gulf of Mexico.  And even a congressional ban on doing an analysis of the resource potential for oil and gas in the Atlantic, Pacific and the eastern gulf.  We can’t even say can we look into it.  Congress has said no.  Then the Anwar.  Back in 1995 President Clinton vetoed it.  It is 700 miles away from a tree.  700 miles away from a tree. This is the point where my hair starts standing up doing its own dance..believe me, it is not a pretty sight.

Oil, when he vetoed this, was $19 a barrel.  He said we didn’t need the oil that much.  New technology was right around the corner and it would be until 2007 until we got the oil.  So, it was going to take us way too long.  Now oil is — let me see here — $125 a barrel, up from $19 a barrel.  We would have been pumping that oil out now.  They say, well, there’s not that much oil to get, yet.  Here’s a solution in the paper:  Try this solution.  See if this doesn’t make your curly hair straight or vice versa! This is quite possibly my favorite solution.  Ready?  They don’t want to go into Anwar.  No, that’s not go in Anwar.  Let’s not go off of our own chest.  Let’s let China do it but not us.  Let’s not go in and take the shale in the mountains.  Let’s go  take coal.  We’re three times the size of Saudi Arabia in coal to oil, three times.  We’re going up to Canada and buying it from them, but we won’t do it ourself.  Here’s a solution.  Are you ready?  Empty out the strategic petroleum reserves.  Empty out the strategic oil reserves.  It’s now holding 700 million barrels of oil.  That’s nothing to sneeze at.  We’re at war in the Middle East.  Empty out the strategic oil reserve?  Are we intentionally trying to destroy ourselves?

By the way, if you go to buy a new car, if you go to buy a new car, it’s going to cost you about $2,000 extra.  Now, why?  We’re having a hard time selling cars.  Detroit is having problems.  Why would cars go up $2,000 per vehicle?  Because the trains are overloaded, because we can’t afford to ship products by air anymore, because the airlines are becoming obsolete, the airlines cost too much money to ship things.  So, people think, well, I’ll just ship it by train.  Well, now  — the backlog on the trains in Chicago is so enormous, it’s costing $2,000 extra per car to get it onto a train.

By the way, the airlines, they announced last week, the people who sell the jet fuel to the airlines, the airlines are in such precarious positions for the first time ever, they’re being told, by the way, you have to pay cash for everything.  They used to have a 20‑day turn around.  They would give you the jet fuel and the airlines had 20 days to pay it off.  That means the people who are selling the airlines’ fuel think they’re not good for 20 days.  They want cash.

We are in a precarious situation and what is Congress doing today?  Cap and trade?  Something that — to protect the environment? Americans are angry! Congress should start getting concerned. I’m telling you, I don’t know how much carbon torches give off, but the environment is going to weep one of these days because I think Americans are going to light torches and grab pitch forks and head to Washington and tell these clowns, get the h*ll out!  But maybe it’s just me.  What do I know?

CNN’s Cafferty controversy puzzling?

Jack Cafferty Merely Spoke The Truth
  by Dave Gibson
NEWSBYUS.COM

The controversy over the recent comments made by CNN’s Jack Cafferty about China is a bit puzzling. Of course, we now live in a world where the truth is almost always taboo.
On April 9, Cafferty appeared in his usual role on CNN’s Situation Room. He was asked by Wolf Blitzer for his opinion on the relationship between the U.S. and China.

Cafferty replied: “I don’t know if China is any different, but our relationship with China is certainly different. We’re in hock to the Chinese up to our eyeballs because of the war in Iraq, for one thing. They’re holding hundreds of billions of dollars worth of our paper. We are also running hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of trade deficits with them, as we continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we’re buying from Wal-Mart.”

Was Cafferty justified in making any or all of those statements? Let us examine the facts

Because our Congress and president have deleted the federal Treasury and bankrupted our grandchildren’s future with earmarks and the ongoing war in Iraq (which has already cost $500 billion), this nation is being crushed under our own debt.. The National Debt now stands at $9.3 trillion. Since September 2006, the debt has been growing by $1.6 billion a day. In order to keep the government running, we borrow from foreign nations. In particular, China now owns 33 percent of our foreign-held debt.

According to the statistics kept on foreign trade by the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. had a $256 billion trade deficit with China in 2007 alone. That figure has doubled just since 2003. Our trade deficit with China has continued to grow by leaps and bounds since 1986, when we imported only $6 billion more than we exported to China.

We all remember the reports thousands of pets poisoned last year by wheat gluten imported from China. The food product conduct the highly toxic chemical melamine which is used in China as a fertilizer, but was banned in the United States. Though very dangerous, Chinese farmers continue to use it as a cheap alternative to safer products.

In addition to our pets, many of our children have been poisoned by Chinese-made products.

Shortly before Christmas, the product known as Aqua Dots was recalled when several children in the United States as well as abroad became violently ill and slipped into comas after sucking on or swallowing the tiny beads. The “Dots” were manufactured in China with a chemical which converts to GHB (gamma-hydroxy butyrate), commonly known as the ‘date-rape drug,’ once ingested. The craft toy was sold mostly at Wal-Mart and Toys “R” Us stores.

The day before the much talked-about Aqua Dots recall, the government announced a recall of 405,000 toys, most of which were toy cars due to toxic levels of lead. Included in the recall were 308,000 Pull-Back Action Toy Cars imported and sold by Dollar General, wind-up toys, music boxes, toy robots, Winnie-the-Pooh Spinning Tops, and 7,200 “Big Red” wagons imported and sold by Northern Tool & Equipment Co.

In September 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled one million Simplicity brand cribs which were made in China. The recall came after a 6-month-old and a 9-month-old baby became pinned and died in the cribs due to a defect. Several more children became trapped in the cribs but survived.

The following list represents only a small fraction of the imported Chinese products recalled in 2007:

baby overalls (imported by Samarra Brothers, metal snaps contained toxic levels of lead)
-ceramic heaters (Family Dollar Stores imported the heaters which overheated and gave off toxic smoke)
-hair dryers (Metropolis Beauty imported travel hair dryers which had no electric shock protection devices as required for all hand-held dryers)
-remote controls (Best Buy recalled 10,000 Insignia DVD Player remotes after they were found to overheat and cause burns)
-children’s jewelry (rings imported by Rachel Rose Kidz which contained high levels of lead)
-batteries (JAKKS Pacific recalled 240,000 battery packs made for toy cars after reports started pouring in about the batteries bursting into flames)
-lamps (Currey &Company imported lamps with defective light sockets that presented fire and shock hazards)
-art sets (Toys “R” Us recalled 27,000 Wooden Coloring Cases which were found to contain toxic levels of lead)
bicycles (imported by Target Stores were recalled after it was discovered that the bike frames were easily broken)
-easels (Distant Learning School Supply imported chalkboard easels which contained toxic levels of lead)
-baby seat (Infant Bouncer Seats imported by Oeuf LLC were recalled after reports of the metal frames breaking began to surface)
-toothpaste (the FDA discovered that many brands of Chinese-made toothpaste contained diethylene glycol (antifreeze) and caused kidney and liver failure)
-tires (Foreign Tire Sales in New Jersey recalled 450,000 tires manufactured in Hangzhou, China posed a serious safety hazard due to tread separation)
-key chains (Dollar General recalled 400,000 key chains which contained toxic levels of lead)
-heaters (Holmes Group was forced to recall 300,000 heaters which contained faulty wiring and presented a serious fire hazard)
-baby clothes (Disney Stores imported sleepwear which failed to meet U.S. flammability standards)

According to China Labor Watch, 80 percent of the $22.3 billion of toys sold in this country are manufactured in China. All of the major U.S. toy companies have turned to cheap Chinese labor to produce their toys. As a result, American factory jobs are becoming non-existent and our children are being poisoned. The importation of so many cheaply-made toys from China is in fact a lose-lose situation for Americans.

On Feb. 8, 2004, The Washington Post ran an article which reported: “More than 80 percent of the 6,000 factories in Wal-Mart’s worldwide database of suppliers are in China. Wal-Mart estimates it spent $15 billion on Chinese-made products last year, accounting for nearly one-eighth of all Chinese exports to the United States. If the company that Sam Walton built with his “Made in America” ad campaign were itself a separate nation, it would rank as China’s fifth-largest export market, ahead of Germany and Britain.”

In that same article, Post reporters Peter S. Goodman and Phillip P. Pan interviewed a Chinese labor activist Li Qiang. He said that factories that supply Wal-Mart and manufacture goods for American companies such as Dell and Mattel require workers to work 80 hours a week, while paying them $75 to $110 a month.

The minimum wage in China varies from each province but ranges from about $35 to $120 a month.

Cafferty went on to describe the Chinese government as “basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.”

Considering China’s abysmal record on human rights, their role in the ongoing massacre taking place in Darfur, and their policies of oppression toward Tibet and Burma…How could any thinking person disagree with him?

No one should ask Jack Cafferty to apologize for his words, doing so would be similar to asking an historian to apologize to the Nazis.

Gore launches $300 Million Campaign

flirt.gif

Oh jeez, the economy is foundering, and now we got Gore  trying to force us all to buy snake oil!

Obama’s chickens (gyrating and waving arms about) have come home to roost

Both Democrats and Republicans often say “follow the money.” If you follow the money on MAN-MADE global warming… you will find  the extreme liberals.

If you ask the biggest proponents of MAN-MADE global warming if they have received or plan to receive personal income because of their MAN-MADE claims, 100% would say YES (followed by ‘what’s wrong with that?’).

I wonder if they ever sell ‘carbon credits’ for 1/2 off. Maybe Al Gore gives a discount if you deposit the funds directly into his Swiss bank account? Slap my face, did I say that?

10 years from now everyone will deny they fell for Al Gore’s nonsense. Until then, we have to live with these idiots spewing their insanity. They sound like a new sect of the Branch Davidians with Al Gore as Jesus and SUVs triggering armageddon.

The far lefties are the only people on earth who play the victim card and scream “CHARACTER ASSASSINATION” when we playback what they just said

In the Al Gore movie, “An Inconvenient Truth”, we see the famous hockey stick chart as proof that global warming is sweeping the Earth. Time and research has taken its toll on that chart. It is no longer regarded as accurate. In fact, it has been quietly dropped by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Now the global warming advocates point to the increase in Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere. Its up, way up; no argument about that. Our modern civilization, powered by fossil fuels, sends tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere as we generate electricity to power our lights, furnaces and air conditioners, computers, television sets, cellphone and ipods and as we drive gasoline powered cars and fly in airplanes. Our modern standard of living is absolutely linked to CO2. And it has increased in our atmosphere from around 218 parts per million in 1900 to about 375 ppm today. You need to understand immediately that CO2 is a naturally occurring trace element in our atmosphere. For one thing, we humans produce it every time we breathe. Plants and trees must have it to grow. So CO2 was already in our atmosphere before we discovered oil. CO2 is not a pollutant.

Save the Planet-stop having babies!

al.jpgI can see it now…Al Gore ‘Person of the year’ or maybe ‘Mother Earth’.

Now I am all for treating our earth and resources with respect. I believe we should.. but people this is getting crazy!

I found this to be an Interesting transcript from Glenn Beck,

GLENN: Ten years ago she was pregnant. In the last ten years she hasn’t had a chance to cradle her own baby. She hasn’t had a chance to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel that little hand slipping into hers, a little voice calling saying, “Mommy, Mommy.” The very thought of it Toni now says makes her shudder with horror because when Toni terminated her pregnancy, she did so in the firm belief that she was helping save the planet. This is one of the more incredible stories you will ever hear. She was sterilized at the age of 27 to reduce her carbon footprint. I don’t know, Toni. You’re still breathing. You breathe good oxygen in, you breathe good oxygen out. You know what I’m saying? The bad oxygen, you’re leaving a pretty big carbon footprint. You’re still eating. Maybe you should go to a doctor, see if they can euthanize you. She was so determined that the terrible mistake of pregnancy should never happen again that she begged the doctor who performed the abortion to sterilize her at the same time. He refused. She works for an environmental charity and she “Relentlessly hunted down a doctor who would perform sterilization. Finally eight years ago Toni got her way. At the age of 27, this young woman, at the height of her reproductive years, was sterilized to protect the planet. Instead of mourning the loss of the baby she killed in the womb, Toni relishes her decision.” She says, “Having children is selfish. It’s all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet.” I don’t think I’ve ever — having children is selfish? Toni, Toni, Toni, hmmm. This clearly, from the lips of a person who has never had children. Having children is quite possibly the most selfless thing you could ever do. Believe me, you don’t have time for yourself when you have children. You can’t be selfish. They’re always pooping and sneezing and cryin’. There’s no time for you!

Did you know that we can help American conserve fuel by cutting down trees? Learn more at EvilConservatives.Com.

She says, “Every person who is born uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees, produces more garbage, more pollution, more greenhouse gases, adds to the problem of overpopulation.” Ahhhh! She says, “While most parents view their children as the ultimate miracle of nature,” she says, “They’re a sinister threat to the future.” Yeah, yeah. She said, “When I started school, I got a job at retail and at 19 I met my first husband. No sooner had we finished our wedding cake than all of our relatives started to ask when we could expect a new addition to the family. I always told them it would never happen, but nobody listened. When I was a child I loved bird watching.” Probably bought that damn bird book! “In my teens bird watching developed into a passion for the environment, as well as welfare for animals. I became a vegetarian when I was 15.” A vegetarian? I scoff at vegetarians but let the vegans. “Even my parents used to smile. Well, you’ll change one day. The only person who understood how I felt was my husband, who didn’t want children, either.” Of course not! He’s a guy. He just wants sex without any consequence.“We both passionately wanted to save the planet.” No, he didn’t. He just wanted to have sex with you. “Not to produce any new life that would only add to the problem. ” Boy, that is the best thing. Stu, is that the best scam going?

You know, In my opinion it is up to the individual on whether or not he/she wants to reproduce, but this is getting freaking ridiculous! I can see it now, first we will be limited as to how many children we may have..Sound like China? let’s see now, one, yes one child is the limit..oh, it was an accident..well, we will have to abort and for this trouble you have caused, we need to charge you carbons too! After all, Gore pays just for having lots of rooms to heat and cool. You need to pay because of the long term space you’re taking up!

E.U. Upset with China

Well, it seems that the powerful E.U. is now more than a little upset with China over the surging value of the Euro. Can you not see how they feel? After all, it makes for unfair trade. So they are going on record now as the U.S. has been doing for awhile now..about time someone joined us..oh well, here is the rest of the story:

By William Schomberg

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Top European Union officials will talk tough in Beijing next week about China’s snowballing trade surplus and its reluctance to open its booming economy further to European business.

The EU has long taken a softer approach to China than the United States. Washington has sued Beijing more often at the World Trade Organization and protested more loudly about China’s currency, which is widely seen as undervalued to help exporters.

But EU officials, alarmed at the surge in the value of the euro, now cite the yuan as their main currency concern and say that while China’s trade surplus with the 27-nation bloc is billowing, EU exporters face barriers to the Chinese market.
In an unprecedented move, EU monetary officials, including the head of the European Central Bank, will urge China on Tuesday in Beijing to speed up strengthening the yuan’s value, echoing French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s call on Saturday.

On Wednesday, at an EU-China summit, European trade chief Peter Mandelson will warn Beijing it must make a “major change” on investment restrictions, red-tape barriers for EU companies, and counterfeiting, or risk tougher action by Brussels.

“We do not intend to turn away from dialogue and cooperation. What we will do is treat China as a normal trading partner in the future, especially by enforcing rules where necessary,” Mandelson said in a statement on Friday.

From almost no trade 20 years ago, the EU recently overtook the United States as the biggest export market for China.

China joined the WTO in 2001 and was given time to adapt to its rules. But with its EU trade surplus heading for 170 billion euros ($252 billion) this year, according to EU estimates, a near 30 percent rise on 2006, European patience is wearing thin.

TWO-FRONT TRADE WAR?

As well as more access for its companies, the EU wants China to chop myriad incentives to export-based investment and do more to encourage local spending and stimulate demand for imports.

In a sign of the changing mood in Brussels, discussions about when to award China the EU’s Market Economy Status — coveted by China because it would reduce the risk of its exporters being hit by anti-dumping duties — have gone quiet.

By contrast, Mandelson has suggested he could soon press ahead with an anti-dumping investigation into imports of Chinese steel after complaints by European industry, an apparent shift from his previously more hands-off approach to Chinese imports.

Litigation at the WTO is also under consideration.

“China cannot afford to fight a two-front trade war with both the United States and EU at the same time, said Cheng Xiaohe at the People’s University of China in Beijing.

EU trade officials stress change will be gradual. But some note that when China wants action, it can happen quickly, citing what they say is an apparent scarcity of counterfeited goods relating to the Chinese Olympics on the streets of China.

“Perhaps if you want to reinforce (anti-piracy), you can,” said David O’Sullivan, the EU’s top civil servant for trade.

For its part, China plans to ask the EU to abolish restrictions on high-tech exports to China, Wang Xinpei, a spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce, said last week.

The ban on technology that could have military uses was imposed after China’s army crushed pro-democracy protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.
